Computer Reliability Increases

Come in and check out the new, faster Internet service at both Lackland libraries. A new Internet service provider contract is in place which will give us faster service and more reliable connectivity. The Patient Library has also added two new computers to its collection for a total of six. The Base Library has 68 computers for public use.

New library program is ‘cool after school’ option

Parents looking for a safe place for their children to do homework after school, while they’re finishing their duty day, attending appointments, etc., will have a viable option thanks to the Lackland Library’s new “Cool after School” program, starting Sept. 9.
Library Director Lenore Shapiro says the program fills a base need.
“Lackland parents are always looking for safe, inexpensive ways to provide afterschool care for their children,” she said. “This is a great alternative to bringing children into the workplace or leaving them at home to their own devices.”
The program, designed for 10-15 year-olds, will be conducted Tuesdays through Thursdays, from 3:30-6 p.m. Students will get help with their homework, have access to computers or can relax with board games, puzzles, etc.
“Though our program will be informal, library staff will work with students on a variety of homework projects,” Ms. Shapiro continued. “Whether they need help with school assignments or to find research materials, we can help.”
Parents need to register their children well in advance before leaving them at the Base Library. Forms will be available when the school year begins.
“Registration is important because we’ll need to know who to expect each day,” Ms. Shapiro explained. “We want to plan activities in advance and have staff available when needed. We’ll also need parent’s contact numbers for emergencies or other situations that may come up.”
